The Stonybreck
If you want to see where Fair Isle knitting began, you’ll need to jump on a jet to Edinburgh, Scotland. Then you’ll need to catch a train from Edinburgh to Aberdeen. After that, you’ll want an overnight ferry to Lerwick, on the Shetland Mainland. And from there, if still undaunted, you’ll find yourself on a single engine prop-plane, buzzing over the North Sea, on your way to a tiny village on a tiny island called Stonybreck. The closest thing to a town that exists on Fair Isle, Stonybreck is a cluster of stone cottages, a lighthouse, and the birthplace of some of the most beautiful sweaters ever crafted by human hands.
Made originally to keep crofters and fishermen warm in the frigid northern winter, Fair Isle sweaters have come to also represent the peaks of style – one of the rare instances when heritage, utility, and fashion twine to become one, and the Stonybreck sweater from Bonobos is no exception. 100% lambswool, and featuring a Bonobos original Fair Isle pattern, the Stonybreck is a sharp yet sturdy pullover that will serve you well for years to come, and keep you stylishly warm time and time again.
