Feeling ‘comfortable and confident’ in Bonobos polos

Marshall Roy — September 17, 2009 @ 5:14 pm

We love making and wearing great clothing not out of sheer materialism, but because we enjoy helping guys feel at their best. One customer nailed it: it’s about comfort and confidence… and if you catch the eye of the fairer sex in the process, so be it.

How important is it to match outerwear to your look?

Brian Spaly — September 16, 2009 @ 8:10 pm

wool overcoatThe email below from Drew struck me as pretty timely, given how much chillier it’s gotten here in New York City over the past two weeks. Winter approaches, and many gents have questions about their outerwear:

Brian,

First off, let me say that I love Bonobos pants, and I love your fashion tips that help me look even better in them. If it weren’t for bonobos.com, I’d still be wearing tan highwaters with black shoes and belt. (more…)

Help make a Bonobos customer Every Man Jack

Marshall Roy — September 2, 2009 @ 2:09 pm

One of our best customers from Atlanta is one of the 12 finalists to be the first Every Man Jack—a spokesperson for the eponymous line of high-end men’s grooming products. Vote for Stephen F. here—no hoopla, just a click!

Here, Stephen (attorney, yoga instructor, and Bonobos enthusiast) talks a little about his favorite line of grooming products, and his favorite line of pants (he’s in the Turqs below):

Stephen in TurqsBNBS: Tell us a little about Every Man Jack.

They are damn good products. I have used expensive products, inexpensive products, products from France, Italy—you name it, I probably have put it on my face, skin, or hair. The Jack body gel smells great and the Jack products don’t make my scalp flake, which is a huge deal for me, having black hair. And as a guy who passionately believes in natural stuff, I love the fact that the Every Man Jack products don’t contain dyes, alcohol or any of the other long list of items that other products have in them.

BNBS: When you first wrote to us, you mentioned that Every Man Jack and Bonobos resonate with one another. In what way?

I love Bonobos for the same reasons I love Every Man Jack and more. First, your clothes make me smile. I try not to take life and myself too seriously and y’all (yes, I am Southern), do the same thing. The names of the pants/shorts/trunks are hysterical. The blog posts also make me laugh every day. Then there are the color choices! I have a pair of the Turqs and I am about to get a pair of the Orange Crush. When I wore the Turqs in Provincetown I was just just so excited to be walking down Commercial Street (the main retail drag) and could not take the smile off of my face. Then I wore the Kid Nikis and Jungle Kings to the beach and I felt like a little kid. Your clothes also fit my body perfectly. My legs and butt are big, my waist is smaller, and nothing fits right. I also love the fact that the patterns and fabrics are stylish, hip and modern without being too over the top. The swatch of fabric on the back pocket is just enough to tell everyone “my pants are different and I love wearing them.” Finally, your corporate brand is one in a million. You have a civic mind, social responsibility, you highlight interesting stuff on the website and your customer service is, bar none, the best around.

BNBS: What about you embodies the Every Man Jack brand/lifestyle?

To me, the Every Man Jack brand is about finding a balance of form and substance. I take great pride in caring for myself, using good products, and looking my best every day. But I also try and find humor, love, positive energy, and freedom in my day as well. I don’t like to take myself too seriously and try, albeit unsuccessfully sometimes, to have a sense of humility about myself. I believe the Jack products are designed with that in mind. Their labels and advertising really convey that the products are high quality, but they use humor and charisma to let you know they don’t take themselves too seriously.

BNBS: From yoga instruction to pro-bono legal services, why do you choose to spend your time volunteering?

I believe each person is unique and special and it is not often that people take the time to try to celebrate the diversity and special qualities of each person. Every person I meet helps teach me a lesson about myself as well and helps me grow. I volunteer to do pro-bono legal work and teach yoga in the park because I get to share my happiness, joy, and services with someone else and hopefully, if nothing else, I make their day and my day a little better.

Last year I volunteered to help with an equestrian event for Special Olympics. My job was to hand out the medals and ribbons to the contestants. I also spent part of the day helping the contestants get to and from certain events. For some, it was a challenge just to get up on the horse and sit there; others were riding like pros. When I was handing out the awards and pinning a ribbon on one contestant, she gave me a hug and told me that she loved me. I have never been so humbled in all of my life. She taught me an invaluable lesson. She taught me to value each and every moment in life and never look at a situation as an adversity but rather as an opportunity. I think of her ALL the time and I even have a video of handing out the awards on my Facebook page.

Peace and happiness!

Christmas in July

Marshall Roy — August 28, 2009 @ 4:01 pm

Christmas in July!

This story/photo from one of our customers out in California is too good not to share.

Notice how both guys take a pair of more stylistically aggressive pants and totally pull off the look by keeping it relatively simple on top. Had Steven (left) chosen a pair of generic khakis, his look overall would be boring. But the boldness of his pants really balances the more traditional light blue button-down and navy jacket.

I showed up to a June wedding wearing my Orange Crush and literally had a girl say to my wife, “he’s wearing the sh*t out of those pants!” My buddy Jay, a budding actor in Hollywood, saw the pants and had to have a pair. So I shot him your link and forgot about it.

A couple weeks later in July, we both showed up to another friend’s wedding—me wearing the Caperton Reds, him wearing the Emerald Isles, like a couple of Christmas elves, smack dab in the middle of July. They were still the best pants at the party, despite the unintended festive holiday allusion.
