The Bonobos fashion interview: Luxist blogger Jared Paul Stern

Blogger Jared Paul Stern has written for the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, New York Times magazine, New York magazine, Details, Playboy, and Men.Style, among others. He writes the Classicist column on Luxist. With the economy showing signs of renewed vigor, Bonobos asked Jared to weigh in on the nature of fancy things.

Jared

What’s the most luxe piece of men’s fashion you remember writing about? Alligator and crocodile jackets, from Louis Vuitton, Ferragamo, and Hermes.

What are the most popular topics on Luxist? Unfortunately celebrities get a lot of traffic, despite their lack of intrinsic interest. I prefer the posts that appeal to real enthusiasts of men’s style. You can find a good roundup of the highlights here.

Has the concept of luxury changed since the economic meltdown? The focus has shifted from mere extravagance for its own sake to investing in luxury goods that justify their cost by lasting for years and continuing to be serviceable and good looking—truly stylish as opposed to merely fashionable, and made by hand with care and attention.

What will define good style in the new economy? It is no longer feasible to buy the next new thing every season; much better to buy things that last and just get better with use and time. It goes back to that old adage “buy cheap and you buy twice.” Good style should be as much of an investment as anything else.
