Presenting the Bonobos Polo

Marshall Roy — July 24, 2009 @ 12:39 am

We’re asked all the time: What should I wear on top with my Bonobos trousers? Your best bet for versatility and style during the summer months is a simple solid-color polo shirt.

Jean Rene LacosteAs usual, necessity was the mother of invention. In the 1920s, tennis champion Jean René Lacoste (known for his ferocity on the court as “the crocodile,” hence the iconic logo) designed a short-sleeved tennis shirt that would be comfortable yet gentlemanly. Knitted fabric for breathability, short sleeves for mobility, and a soft collar that could be flipped upwards to protect the back of the neck from sun.

Functional, sporty, elegant: the polo shirt has Bonobos written all over it, and soon, we’ll offer our version of this timeless garment. Like our trousers, shorts, and swim trunks, our polo shirts will be made of world-class fabric and fit superbly. We know that guys don’t often enjoy feeling like walking advertisements, so we’ve left the left breast completely logo-free. We have, however, embroidered our signature “B” on the inner placket—but it can be easily hidden by buttoning up. We’ll also let you choose if you want the embroidery in a contrasting color, or dyed to match, meaning you can decide just how much brand identity you want displayed to the world.

Our idea was simply to produce shirts that you could rock with any trouser in our collection. Available in black, navy, light blue, white, pink, and mint green, these will become your go-to shirts for the rest of summer into autumn. Suitable anywhere comfort commingles with class.

Magnificent. I cannot wait to see the size charts and exactly what shade the pink is. If the Bonobos ninjas do not stop making new clothing products I may quit shopping anywhere else.

So if the pants are meant to handle hockey butts, does this mean the polos can handle basketball shoulders?

Gorgeous! I am sick and tired of cutting away the Lacoste crocodiles from my polos while I am not really impressed about their quality. I am sure that you guys will put the quest for the perfect polo to an end!

    Thanks beforehand!

can we have a special called “the six pack”? buy all six at a discounted price, or throw in some pants, etc? or maybe you can just throw in one of these…

    Michael–

Price point isn’t set in stone yet, but it’ll be somewhere between J. Crew and Brooks Brothers–about $69.

Is this what Brian was wearing in the swim launch party photos on Guest of a Guest?

    Hi Galugo,

This was what Brian was wearing at the swim launch party.

We’ll be launching single polos for $69, but there will be BIG discounts for orders of 3 and orders of 6 (all 6 color orders will receive special care from the ninjas)

I pray these aren’t “slim fit” Don’t get me wrong, I also pray they aren’t “classic fit” (i.e. the brooks brothers classic cut), but I’m directly in between slim and regular cuts, and it’s annoying, because I end up having to buy on the classic cuts which are too long and too baggy throughout for me.

I applaud the addition of polos. Loving that you abandoned the logos/name on the breast, I refuse to wear anything with a logo on it. Despite my hate of advertising, I will be a walking bonobos billboard with the ape rundown included below (assuming I can fit in them).

    15 pairs of pants
    2 pairs of trunks
    2 pairs of shorts
    ??? polos (to come)

Love the idea of a Bonobos 6-pack hat made for BG comment #7. I think we need to get a couple of these as prizes for best blog comment of day.

I’m super excited about these Polos. I really appreciate that the B logo is discreetly placed.

As for the fit, I want something thats cleaner than the popped-collar prep RL trash, but not so fit that I feel like I should move to the Chelsea district.

the above model looks real comfortable; I don’t think I need to worry.

I want a six pack too. or even a three pack. You guys rock.
