World Cup Soccer Style

cforsythe — June 23, 2010 @ 3:38 pm

Today marked the third time in history that USA’s soccer team has made it to round 2 of the World Cup and Team Bonobos was there to take part. We all trekked down to Duke’s Sports Bar and tacky-themed Road House (some dressed more patriotically than others) and sat in anticipation as we watched numerous failed goal attempts and countless scoreless minutes pass by.

As the game neared its end, we all feared another tie game, but in the first extra minute of play, our boy Donovan knocked a loose ball into the back of an unguarded net for the win. Check out the Bonobos team below in our (mostly) red, white and blue attire. We’ve still got a few of the Star Spanglers left for those of you who missed the boat on the 21st Ammendments shorts (pictured below).

USA is playing again on Saturday and you can bet your buttons we’ll be cheerin’ hard in our reds, whites and blues with a cup of American-made spirits (yes I’ll have some lemonade with my Jack Daniels, please and thank you) praying for another victory.

What did you wear to watch the World Cup?

GoGo Ninja: June 21 in Bryant Park!

James DiMartino — June 17, 2010 @ 3:26 pm

Ok all you tweeters, here’s where following @bonobosninjas is going to pay off.  Monday, June 21st is going to be the first official GoGo Ninja expedition!  GoGo Ninja is a program that we are going to start doing to include you all in the Bonobos experience a little closer to home (as long as your home is New York City).  This is your chance to meet a couple of the ninjas and even win some cold hard “Bonobucks!”

This first expedition is going to be to in Bryant Park (40th and 6th Avenue).  Starting at 5:00pm, one or two of the ninjas will be camped out for the premiere of the Bryant Park Summer Film Festival.  The first flick in the series is Ian Flemming’s James Bond in Goldfinger!  We’ll be there doing a bit of cheese and baguette grubbin’ and answering all of your emails, tweets, etc.

Here’s where the fun begins.  We’ll be handing out gift certificates to the three people throughout the night.  However, we won’t just be doing something for nothing.  We are looking for 3 specific things:

1. Someone to show up and yell, “I LOVE BONOBOS!” in the middle of the park.

**Prize = $15 gift certificate

2. Someone to come say hi that is actually wearing a pair of Bonobos pants (or polo, shorts, etc).

**Prize = $15 gift certificate

3. Someone who comes to say hi and brings us a 6 pack (which of course we wouldn’t drink until we are at home…).

**Prize = $25 gift certificate

We will have a blanket and some sort of Ninja flag so that you can find us a little easier and most likely we’ll have a couple consolation prizes for any stragglers.  We’ll also be tweeting updates on who has shown up and what they’ve done so that you will be aware of what tasks are left.

See you on Monday, June 21!

-@JamesBonobos

ps- We’ve got a challenge for those NOT in Bryant Park as well!  With the ease of using video now a days (iPhone, Flip cam, 8mm, etc…), if you are at an outdoor movie in a park and can capture a quick video of the film you’re seeing AND you or your friends standing up and yelling, “I LOVE BONOBOS!” we’ll extend a prize to you as well!  Just email ninjas@bonobos.com with the video attached and its all yours.

Name our three retro volley swim shorts! Contest CLOSED!

Mike Hondorp — June 8, 2010 @ 12:22 pm

In addition to our board shorts we launched a couple weeks ago (more coming soon!), we’re adding a new style to our 2010 swim line.

Three great colors of what we lovingly refer to as “retro” or “volley” swim shorts are coming soon.  Esquire magazine loves them, and recently featured our red retro shorts in their top sixteen Best Men’s Bathing Suits Feature (image seen to the left).

Our board shorts shorter brother, the volley short is great for the active beachgoer.  Beach volleyball, anyone? Or a reenactment of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game video?

Three colors are launching soon, but first they need names. In addition to red, we’ve got navy and electric blue as seen below–all in a soft, peached quick-drying fabric.

Get creative and send us your names in the comments! And remember to help us name all three!

Observations on Belmont Style: A Ninja’s 2 Cents

cforsythe — June 7, 2010 @ 6:46 pm

This past weekend, hundreds of mostly inebriated 20-somethings scrambled upstate to Elmont, NY for this year’s Belmont Stakes horse races. By car, by train or in my case, by party bus we made the trek described by many as a mass exodus of seersucker and sun dresses. For us, the day started at 10am with screwmosas, one of my favorite brunch beverages. Why settle for a screwdriver or a mimosa when you can have the best of both worlds all at once? Exactly. I knew you’d be on board.

The Belmont style is very unique and is not to be confused with its older brother, The Kentucky Derby. The crowd at The Belmont, from what I could see, consisted mainly of race-goers in their 20s, so the traditional suited gentleman was a rarity at best—the look was noticeably more casual and at 10 bucks a head, I suppose not much else could be expected. I myself had on a pair of orange, rolled seersucker shorts (coming soon!), white oxford, purple gingham handkerchief and a pair of white Jack Purcells. Pastels were in high fashion and floral print ties and dresses littered the site as seen at The Derby, but t-shirts (though typically in spring colors) were more popular than expected. The noticeable absence of mint juleps was another unexpected aspect of the race. I couldn’t find a place to buy one for the life of me. Maybe half the minibar spilling across my lap on the way up was to blame. Fingers crossed it was just bad luck.

In preparation, I put together several potential looks for myself and thought I’d share. Ultimately, I went a little more casual but it was hard to say no to these numbers. And now for the slide show:

For option #1 I snagged a pair of purple seersucker shorts (coming soon!) and put it with a white button-down (is that a Bonobos dress shirt I see?) and purple gingham bow tie by Ernest Alexander.

For option #2 I put together a blue Bonobos polo with the ever-popular Tequila Sunrise Lawn Parties.

Option #3 consists of The Cape Codders Lawn Parties, white button-down and plaid tie by Ernest Alexander.

If you’ve got some stellar photos of your Belmont Experience, send ‘em our way. We’d love to see how you put it all together.

All in all a great day and I can’t wait for The Belmont 2011 to see if this year’s festivites can be topped. It’s doubtful but I’m up for the challenge and it doesn’t take much to get me decked out in pastel and seersucker.  Next stop, the real deal…and perhaps the Preakness just for fun.  I could use a triple crown.

The First Bonobos Suit…

Mike Hondorp — June 2, 2010 @ 2:55 pm

…launches next week, and we’re giving you a sneak peak.  This navy wool suit with a navy/red paisley bandana print lining is the first in the line of our expanding suit and suit separates line, and you’d look great in it.  Want in on the action?  As with all exclusive new products, we’ll be launching the suit to our Bonobos Pro e-mail list first, so if you want first dibs, you have two choices.

1) Subscribe to the Pro e-mail list here.  (Pros get more than one e-mail per week.)

2) E-mail the ninjas at:  ninjas @ bonobos . com to be put on the Ninja Watchlist for our navy suit.

With that lining, I’ll be wearing mine inside-out.

p.s. Please excuse the clandestine behind-the-scenes photography; but we had to be very secretive around the designers.
