Bonobos swings by Harvard

marshall — September 24, 2008 @ 6:42 am

When you’ve got a good thing going, why stop there? (Case in point: the snapdragons 1 and snapdragons 2… not to mention our recent revival of the mint juleps). We’ll be in downtown Boston for a trunk show this weekend, so we decided to swing by Harvard Business School and show the gentlemen scholars there a few of our top-tier trousers.

We’ll be in the private room of the Grille Spangler on Sunday from 1-6 pm with a ton of inventory in tow for new customers to see and feel in person, ask questions about, try on, and potentially walk away with. Interested? Shoot an e-mail to  ninjas at bonobos.com and let us know.

Not a Harvardite? You’re not out of luck.

“My friend, your pants–they are the new hit in Boston!”

marshall — September 23, 2008 @ 12:35 pm

das_frontfull.jpgIf anyone’s got his finger on the pulse of what’s new and awesome in trousers, it’s a tailor. We were thrilled to hear this anecdote from one of our most stellar customers, Grady Snyder in Boston:

…stopped by my tailor’s shop [Bostonian Tailoring] last week. Richard was on the phone when I walked in, but he waved me over to his storage room. In his rack of to-do clothes, he pulled out four hangers, holding: touchstones, dark and stormys, shoguns, and capertons. Got off the phone and in his thick Armenian accent said, “My friend, your pants–they are the new hit in Boston!”

It’s not all that surprising that the trouser revolution is taking root in Boston, given that city’s rich history of telling the status quo to buzz off, we’ve got a better thing brewing, and it ain’t just a shipload of tea in the harbor.

In fact, while Bonobos is in town this weekend at the Nine Zero Hotel, we may have to orchestrate a ninja mission, something of an homage to the revolutionaries who’ve come before us. Crates of poorly-fitting, mass-produced, and heinously marked-up khakis bobbing helplessly in the icy harbor… the very thought of it makes me want to put on a Sox cap, crack open a Sam Adams, and curl up with Johnny Tremain.

Nonsociety in the Hamptons and floral print Bonobos

andy — August 18, 2008 @ 8:48 am

This weekend was my maiden voyage to the Hamptons. Ok, ok. I get it.

Saturday night I attended a birthday party in Watermill. There, among other people, I met Julia Allison, who had nice thing to say about my floral print Bonobos. I had not met Julia before - though I had seen her column on dating in Time Out New York way back when there was a story on Bonobos in that magazine.

Imagine my surprise when, the following day, the below photo turns up on the iPhone of one of the girls I was staying with in the Hamptons. Julia put the picture up on her website - which is called NonSociety. Click here to check it out.

andyjulia.jpg

Julia is a self-made internet celebrity, on the cover of WIRED magazine this month. I admire what she’s doing - using the internet in a clever and creative way to build a business. At Bonobos, we are trying to do the same thing. Except we make great trousers.
I did introduce Julia to the research of John Gottman. I figured as one of New York’s premiere dating advisors and relationship specialists, she ought to know about things like the four horseman of a relationship and the 5:1 ratio praise to criticism. Brian and I talk about Gottman often. As single guys, we are experts on relationships.

If you don’t get to see Julia’s site, this is what she had to say about my Bonobos:

HOW AWESOME ARE HIS PANTS?? I’m a big fan of men who have the balls to wear outfits like that.

These pants were so loud I was a bit nervous about wearing them. But pairing them with a simple button down and a black tie silk belt calmed me down.

Should we make more floral print Bonobos? Would you buy them? We have a handful of samples at the Bonobos loft which we may be putting on our website before long.

Before I go, two more happy snaps from the Hamptons. Fantastic party. Fantastic weekend.

Now back to the Monday grind in Manhattan.

It’s Always Trousery in Philadelphia

dane — February 25, 2008 @ 3:46 pm

phillytfull.jpgTo those of you kind enough to grace our Philly Trunk Show with your presence, we’d like to extend a warm, cheesesteaky thank you. We hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did, and more importantly, we hope you walked away with pants that will bring you happiness for years to come. It was great to see old Philly friends, and fantastic to make new ones. For many of you, it was a first peek at our new line of wool dress pants: The G4, Winstons, and Pluperfects. For others, it was a chance to rekindle a love affair with our distinct lightweight corduroy. And for some of you - oh, don’t think we didn’t see you - a sultry tryst with the lady known as superfine twill. So thanks again, and keep your eyes peeled for the next Bonobos Trunk Show in your city/town/private martial arts tournament island.

Brian Spaly: Folk Hero, Pant Designer . . . Air Guitar Legend?

dane — February 11, 2008 @ 1:12 pm

airguitarfull.jpg

Here at Bonobos HQ, we would like to observe a moment of silence . . . no, wait, that’s weird. Ok, we would like to take a second to acknowledge the hard work and accomplishments of our designer (and founder) Brian Spaly. We are thrilled with the recent burst of new trousers, including our freshly unveiled line of dress pants (G4, Winstons, Pluperfects) and some other styles that are currently too hot to even mention (they’re coming soon). Brian is the guy behind the guy, and it is only through his fierce alchemy of twill, wool, and corduroy that Bonobos are possible. Without his expertise, there would be nothing but burlap and broken dreams. So, thank you Mr. Spaly. Thank you for your dedication, your hard work, your good taste, and your beautiful, beautiful pants.

That having been said, there is another side to Mr. Spaly that we would be criminally negligent in not addressing: Air Guitar Warrior. You see, when not entangled in a sartorial labyrinth of his own design, Brian loves nothing more than to gnash out a few utterly nasty licks on his invisible ax. No occasion is too formal, no setting too solemn - the beast called Rock and Roll is a demanding mistress, and there are times when the only way to slake her demonic thirst is with a pick-slide across white-hot imaginary frets. Just take a gander at him, clad in his Bonobos, letting the gods of Rock and Roll hear HIS thunder. Can you feel the raw, primal force of his air guitar? Can you make out the air roadies in the background? Can you see them jacking up the air amps, loading up the air kegs and talking to the air groupies about the post-concert air party? Brian can.

Pant Scratch Fever

dane — February 8, 2008 @ 12:06 pm

winstonfull.jpgThere is electricity in the air . . . a tremor beneath the feet. Like the rib-tingling bass of an approaching storm, or the guns of a far off battle. Something is coming. Can you feel it? No, the circus is not in town. The Harlem Globetrotters are away this week. Something else equally magnificent is occurring this Saturday, between 2PM and 5PM in New York City. A Bonobos trunk show. This event, just like when the video for “Wicked Game” used to come on MTV, is not something you want to miss. And, just like Helena Christensen in said video, it might make your extremities tingle with cathartic joy. The whole gang will be there - Midnight Blue, Mint Julep, and Turq, just to name a few. So come by and try on some pants. Grab a brew from the fridge and double-dip a chip. Make new human friends and pant friends alike, in equal measure. Details below:

Date: Saturday February 9

Time: between 2PM and 5PM

Location: 233 West 14th Street, Apartment 2R (between 7th and 8th Avenues)
